I found that when she said "it was my body that had changed", it had an underlying depressing note about it, and probably something that most people can relate to at some point or another.
I realise that Marita's 'change' is quite different to most people, but I think that's part of the strength of the comic. Despite the somewhat odd and interesting circumstances in the story, it always remains very relatable!
I think you caught one of the undertones of this story -- dealing w/physical changes and body horrors & lack of control. Big difference w/her is the very short time frame for deal with extreme changes.
